Health problems

Before to buy a  crested gecko should be sure that the animal acquires assets mustn’t problems to climb and jump, you have bright eyes, skin mites and not without wounds, tail straight and make solid stool dark brown with a whitish fillet. If any of these features may not be met before an animal is sick.

If you already have a group and want to add another item, then go into a process of quarantine, where for a minimum of one month the animal will be isolated in a container. During this time we can desparasitación the animal with a parasite, to avoid passing the quarantine of infected parasites on the rest of the group (the parasite must be prescribed by a veterinarian, who will tell us the exact dosage, etc.) . Remember to wash your hands or change globes  every time you handle this animal to prevent diseases transmitted through them to the group.

One of the most common parasites that can be found in the feces of these animals are Trichomonas (see image below) and must be treated, the most common treatment being a flagellated protozoan is Flagyl, but better wait for the veterinarian’s observations tell us that the dosage and how often they need to manage.

Trichomonas 100x
If your animal begins to suffer diarees and thins, we will ask the vet to do a Ziehl Neelsen staining, to see if there is Cryptosporidium spp. (see image below), and then we may recommend realirzar PCR to detect if there is DNA of the protozoan (final confirmation) and subtype to it. If our positive female animal is bad news, because this package is highly resistant protozoan and now can only try to stop the replication and release oocytes in the faeces. This is with Paromomicina (Humate), veterinarian  tell us time and dose.  But one thing that should be clear is that this animal can never be with others, because it can infect. There have to sanitize processing equipment, etc., that have been in contact with the sick animal: Bleach 10% or   Ammonia 50% or F10 disinfectant.

FTS (tail drop syndrome)

Observed in the area of the tail closest to the spindle of the animal in her tail has a zigzag orientation. At first it was thought that this happened in animals with a low levels of calcium, but at present it is believed that the cause is that the geckos sleep upside down and the tail falls on his head and even that may be due to unknown genetic causes. This condition can lead to problems in the hip. To avoid sleeping if we see some examples of the way we have to relocate.

MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease)

An animal that has trouble moving and unable to adhere to surfaces, their sacks of calcium are low and the tail has to zigzag is an indicator that metabolizes calcium, or because your diet does not have the or because it gives a contribution of vitamin D3 which helps absorb (and UVB light). This can trigger an EMO (metabolic bone disease). It are clear signs: swollen legs and jaw look soft or ‘soft’. This disease can cause breakage of bones, so he has the slightest hint of calcium supplied by the diet in cases in which the symptoms of a broken jaw EMO calcium will be supplied through a vet puncture. It is inadvisable to use all of the females who have just replaced an EMO or suffer to breed.

Calcium levels can be observed, grabbing the animal by a small pressure on the sides of the jaw, it will open and you can see two white bags in the back of the mouth. In principle, adult females must have coats larger than males, as much calcium as they use eggs. It is advisable to take this procedure more than twice in a breeding season, due to the stress that causes the animal.

We maintain control of the weight of our animals, so we can know if a female has eggs. If  weight drastically decreases  is a sign that something is wrong, for example: it is a sign of disease (parasite, etc.).

We make a regular collection of faeces and thorough washing of their enclosures.

Cresties may have problems shedding. The trouble shedding problems occur in the humidity of the enclosure: too low. So we can put our crested a tupperware holes with a piece of damp paper towel and then closed for 15 minutes to help move.

To avoid dehydration problems, which are reflected in the skin of the animal. We will give you a supply of fresh water. Sometimes we can reinforce that water with substances that give an extra supply of electrolytes (example: Reptoboost).

If unfortunately one of our cresties “loose” tail, we put the animal in a sterile container with a wet paper and carefully we put a little water+ iodine (1:5) in the wound,  to prevent infections.
